For decades, the towering commercial forests of Tanzania’s Southern Highlands were seen as the exclusive domain of the government and massive industrial corporations.
To smallholders in Iringa, Njombe, and Morogoro, trees were just background scenery until visionary farmers realized their rich local soils and rolling hills held the key to transforming their families' futures.
Recognizing that an individual farmer lacked market bargaining power and technical training, neighbors united at the village level to form voluntary Tree Growers Associations (TGAs).
Under this brilliant community model, members received enough premium, disease-resilient seedlings to plant their first acre completely free, with additional seedlings heavily subsidized at just TZS 70, allowing even the most vulnerable rural families to confidently build their own profitable woodlots.
As the quality of local timber soared, word of this success spread rapidly to the western and northern regions of Tanzania, creating an urgent need for a unified, nationwide institutional voice.
In response, this grassroots movement officially evolved in 2017 into the Tanzania Tree Growers Associations Union (TTGAU), transitioning from a collection of donor-dependent groups into a self-sustaining, member-funded apex body. Today, TTGAU proudly represents 159 affiliate TGAs and over 10,400 active smallholder farmers, successfully transforming the forestry landscape by lobbying for critical tax reforms, connecting local growers directly to lucrative timber value chains, and establishing 170 hectares of improved seed orchards. What began as a handful of scattered farmers has grown into a robust national network, proving that small-scale growers can achieve massive economic and environmental impact.
